Bucket lists, wish lists and to do lists

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhen I first sat down to write I wasn’t sure of what this piece would be about.

Then I started thinking about all the things that I would like to experience some day – when I have the time and the money. And as I am a bit of a sports nut my bucket list was starting to fill up with such events as; the Olympics, Daytona 500, NRL Grand Final, State of Origin, Manchester United home game, The Olympia, NFL Super Bowl, Baseball World Series, Rugby World Cup tour……….. and many more.

Yes, my bucket list certainly had some neat things on it, and I do hope to achieve some of these eventually, but then when picturing myself at these events I realised one thing – that these were THINGS and not experiences, because experiences should be shared with someone you care about.

And so my bucket list became a wish list to be shared and so I turned it around to read more like:

Daytona 500 and The Olympia with my wife (somehow the noise and smell of race cars and the sight of half-naked muscle men exciting?) and perhaps my 2 year old son who absolutely loves the movie Cars.

Rugby World Cup Tour with my Dad who was a very good player in his day (and somehow always thinks the All Blacks could have played better), and we often meet to watch them play just like we did in the late 70’s and into the 80’s when we had to get up in the middle of the night watch the gameon our PYE black and white TV.

My oldest son would love to go with me to all of these as he also loves sports and travelling.

All these became more important and more achievable and sit alongside of the other goals and dreams that we have for our family and kids such as our home and their education.

So what happens next? Are they like the usual resolutions that are forgotten as quickly as they are dreamt up? No these have been written down, and posted on the fridge as a to do list so that we can look at them again and make our plans to achieve all that we can – something to keep us on track. And even if we were to fall short of all the goals at least it will be more enjoyable to achieve the ones that we can, together.

So to keep it simple – we’ll:

  • Create dreams and goals together
  • Have plans in place should the worst happen
  • Keep reviewing to keep us on track
  • Have heaps of fun along the way
  • Celebrate these experiences and achievements together
  • Build great memories
